Air pollution has become one of the greatest challenges that need to be solved globally. Polymeric membranes, which can be used to filter water and air, have recently been given more attention than other water and air filtration methods. In the field of water filtration, we have demonstrated fabrication of low-cost activated carbon disc for bacteria removal in the contaminated water. Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane solution was used as a bonding agent for the disc as well as to improve the filtration performance. The composition ratio between activated carbon powder and the PES membrane were controlled to achieve bonding stability and filtration property of the disc. As a result, activated carbon disc significantly removed 99% of total coliform in the contaminated water.
As for air filtration membranes, we are developing a 3D printed mask utilizing commercial non-woven fabric coated with Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The 3D printed mask was fabricated by using fused deposition modelling prior to design using CAD software. Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) and viral filtration efficiency (VFE) tests were conducted on the membrane filter. Developed membrane filters show 91.5 % of bacterial filtration efficiency and 83.4% of viral filtration efficiency. The same membrane can be used as filtration media for air purifiers. This study highlights that the fabricated reusable 3D-printed mask has a potential as an effective, environmentally friendly alternative to disposable N95 respirators among healthcare workers.
