The information listed below is an abstract from the Mandarin Chinese version

In Southeast Asia, the last decade has presented unprecedented changes to all aspects of our societies: economically, politically, environmentally and culturally. Therefore, since universities are not only sanctuaries of knowledge, culture and technology but also important centers for the cultivation of a nation's resources, they are being called upon to respond and be accountable to those who look for leadership. The "Presidents' Forum of Southeast Asia Universities" was launched to accomplish this objective.

Topics of the Forum included:

1. The Impact of Globalization on Higher Education

2. The Position of Higher Education within the Regional and Multi-Cultural Framework

3. The Model of Regional Academic Cooperation and Communication

4. The Importance of International Organizations for the Global Cooperation of Higher Education

► Conclusion

I. Conclusion

  1. To enhance their global competitiveness, universities in Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries should establish a platform for future cooperation.
  2. Based on the political and economical relationships developed between Taiwan and Southeast Asian counties, universities in this region should collaborate to create a more beneficial environment for interactions among higher education.
  3. To cultivate prospective industrial elites, universities in Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries should invest more in the improvement of modern technology as a resources of education.
  4. To maintain the quality of higher education, a common standard should be set up for universities in Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries.

II. Recommendation

  1. Establish student exchange programs and encourage students from Southeast Asia to study in universities of Taiwan.
  2. Promote faculty exchange programs between Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries.
  3. Foster the founding of "Presidents' Forum of Southeast Asia and Taiwan Universities" as a constant venue for handling the affairs mentioned above.
