Challenge for Shrimp Aquaculture

Abstract

The International Center for the Scientific Development of Shrimp Aquaculture includes a shrimp genome biology laboratory, a shrimp disease laboratory, OIE (Organization for World Animal Health) reference laboratories for white spot disease (WSD) and acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease, and a Nuclear Breeding Center (NBC). To achieve our mission of a sustainable shrimp aquaculture industry, the Center focuses on the following important challenges:
(1) control measures to minimize the risk of disease outbreak and transmission, 
(2) genetically based production of disease-resistant shrimp, 
(3) shrimp culture systems that conserve energy and water, and
(4) development of scientific, aquacultural and corporate skills that serve both academia and the shrimp aquaculture industry.

We aim to provide not only high-impact scientific output (publications and presentations), but also a unique hands-on learning environment for students of aquaculture.

In the past few years, we have successfully identified and bred families of virus- resistant shrimp, and confirmed that this WSD resistance is heritable. As part of our long-term sustainable breeding program, we also have established an indoor culture facility with high biosecurity and a closed circulation water system to support the entire life cycle of these WSD- resistant shrimp.
