2014 SATU Presidents' Forum with a highlight of "Scopus" young researcher award.


A total of 85 officials from 65 universities in Asia gathered in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, for a two-day forum, November 28-29, to discuss strategies for Transforming Asian Higher Education in the 21st Century with a focus on MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses. The opening ceremony of 2014 Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents' Forum) was held at 1:20 pm November 28 at Conference Room 1 of International Conference Hall, NCKU. Following by the "Scopus" young researcher Awards.  This award hosted by Elsevier attracted high-quality submissions from across Taiwan, and were evaluated by independent subject experts for each of the award categories. After the opening ceremony, selected joint research scheme principal investigators from University of Malaya and NCKU have reported their projects. Dr. Fong-Chin Su, director of Medical Device Innovation Center has talked about ”Global Academia-Industry Alliance on Medical Devices from Innovation to Value Creationa”. Then the keynote speech on “JMOOC- MOOC from Japan, current status and perspective” was given by Dr. Katsuhiko Shirai, President of JMOOC. Dinner banquet is arranged at Shangri-la’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Shanghai Pavilion.

 

On the second day, there were 4 keynote speeches and a colloquium. Dr. R.K. Shevgaonkar, Director of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi talked about “ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in Higher Education”. Dr. Stephen J.H. Yang, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science & Information Engineering, National Central University talked about “MOOCs in Taiwan”. Dr. Wang-Hsiang Hwang, Deputy Minister, National Development Council talked about “Cross-border education and internship in the e-learning age”. Mr. Aimin Zhu, University Relations Manager of Google China talked about “An Overview of Google's Global MOOC Efforts and Practice”. In the colloquium, panelists talked about “Innovative and Cooperative Education- MOOCs for professional developments in SATU”. Experiences are shared by Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, President of Tamkang University, Dr. Lee Sing Kong, Vice President of Nanyang Technological University, Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, Deputy President of University of Malaya, Dr. Rajiv Dusane, Dean International Relations, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Dr. Stephen J.H. Yang, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science & Information Engineering, National Central University, Dr. Louis Chen, Chair of Global Brands Management Association, Dr. Li-Chieh Lin, Deputy Director General of Digital Education Institute, Institute for Information Industry. During lunch hours, students from Southeast Asia have shared their experiences of studying in NCKU.

 

At the end of the forum in the SATU General Assembly, the chairman of the SATU Presidents’ Forum Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung has shared the good news that Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, Executive Vice President of National Cheng Kung University will be the next President of NCKU and Chairperson of the SATU Presidents’ Forum.
