2014 SATU Presidents' Forum

A total of 85 officials from 65 universities, located in Southeast and South Asia, gathered at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), located in southern Taiwan, for the two-day 2014 Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU Presidents' Forum or SATU for short) General Assembly, on November 28–29. The main focus of this year’s assembly was to discuss strategies for “Transforming Asian higher education in the 21^st century with a focus on MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses.” Please look at the video composed of photographs taken during the 2014 event at http://youtu.be/JAsUiMAnpxI (for better image resolution, please set the quality at the high resolution version 720p HD).

The opening ceremony of the General Assembly took place at 1:20 pm, November 28, in Conference Room 1 of the International Conference Hall. This was followed by the announcement of the "Taiwan Scopus Young Researcher Awards." This award was hosted by Elsevier, a world-leading provider of information solutions that enhance the performance of science, health, and technology professionals. This competition attracted high-quality submissions from across Taiwan, which were evaluated by independent subject experts for each award category. Eight Taiwanese scientists were awarded for their outstanding achievements in research. For more details, please visit the website.

Joint Research Scheme (JRS) principal investigators from the University of Malaya and NCKU, then, reported their projects. In addition, Dr. Fong-Chin Su, the Director of the Medical Device Innovation Center, talked about “Global Academia–Industry Alliance (GAIA) on medical devices from innovation to value creation.” Then, a keynote speech titled “JMOOC – MOOC from Japan, current status and perspective” was given by Dr. Katsuhiko Shirai, President of JMOOC.

On the second day, there were four keynote speeches and a colloquium. Dr. R. K. Shevgaonkar, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, talked about “ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in higher education.” Dr. Stephen J. H. Yang, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science & Information Engineering at the National Central University, discussed “MOOCs in Taiwan.” Dr. Wang-Hsiang Hwang, the Deputy Minister of the National Development Council, focused on “Cross-border education and internship in the e-learning age.” Lastly, Mr. Aimin Zhu, the University Relations Manager of Google China, talked about “An overview of Google's global MOOC efforts and practice.”

In the colloquium, panelists talked about “Innovative and cooperative education – MOOCs for professional developments in SATU.” Experiences were shared by Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, the President of Tamkang University, Dr. Lee Sing Kong, the Vice President of the Nanyang Technological University, Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, the Deputy President of the University of Malaya, Dr. Rajiv Dusane, the Dean of International Relations at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Dr. Stephen J. H. Yang, a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science & Information Engineering at the National Central University, Dr. Louis Chen, the Chair of the Global Brands Management Association, and Dr. Li-Chieh Lin, the Deputy Director General of the Digital Education Institute at the Institute for Information Industry. Additionally, during lunch, students from Southeast Asia shared their experiences of studying at NCKU.

At the end of the General Assembly, the Chairman of the SATU Presidents’ Forum Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung shared the good news that Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su, the Executive Vice President of the National Cheng Kung University, would be the next President of NCKU and Chairperson of the SATU Presidents’ Forum.
